It doesn’t really matter how many units Apple will sell in the first year after launching its highly anticipated mixed reality device today.
Tom Emrich from Niantic highlights a great point which is that Apple is always redefining a product category and essentially creating something that after a little while is considered the “first” product in that category - iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watch are all products that came to define product categories - Music Players, Smartphones, Tablets, Smartwatches.
Apple is rarely the first but is typically always the best.
In episode 51 of Into The Metaverse I briefly talked with Priya about Apple's new device launch and argued that today's launch is definitely going to be an inflection point for the VR/AR category but the specific first iteration of Apple's mixed reality product may not necessarily be the category's iPhone moment. What I suspect it will do is shine a whole new light on the wider conversation about the metaverse.
The upside: reigniting the conversation about the metaverse and why virtual worlds in 3D are going to play such an instrumental role in what the future of the Internet looks like.
The downside: we'll once again have to discuss why the metaverse is not a VR device but rather a device-agnostic digital realm which people will access through multiple for factors.
Whatever happens next, today is going to be a thrilling day for anyone who's building or investing in the space and millions of enthusiasts - in #VR, #AR, #virtualworlds, #gaming, #entertainment, #brands, #Roblox #Epic and the #metaverse space as a whole.
