We’re back with another episode of Into the Metaverse, episode 6 of season 2, with a fantastic interview with Marc Whitten, the Senior Vice President of Create at Unity Technologies. Marc was previously the the VP of Entertainment Devices and Services at Amazon, Chief Product Officer at Sonos and Corporate VP and Chief Product Officer of Xbox at Microsoft.
The conversation was fantastic and covered a broad array of topics from how Unity plans to invest to maintain a leadership position in real-time 3d software in the metaverse era. We also discussed how the company is aiming to democratize more of its tools to empower millions of creators with real-time 3d capabilities and how they think about interoperability in the metaverse, which we agree is almost table-stakes at this point. We also discussed the company’s M&A strategy in the Create business after recently acquiring Weta Digital for $1.625 billion, the company’s largest ever deal.
For those less familiar with the company, Unity provides creative tools to support game developers of all sizes, from indies to growing studios to large enterprises. More than 5 billion monthly downloads of Apps are made with Unity, there are over 3.9 billion monthly users of Unity-based content and more than 20 platforms run Unity games. Alongside games, Unity is also expanding into new industry verticals with its digital twins and other solutions for sectors including automotive, construction and engineering.
