China’s metaverse is racing ahead on a parallel path to the west, as social media and Internet giants, hardware makers and even government agencies seek to capitalize on this next big technology platform. But can China’s metaverse develop similarly to the west or will it have its own flavor? And is there hope for a unified Internet that transverses the great firewall in the metaverse era? And how can Chinese creators leverage new tools to export content to a global audience?
We had a fantastic conversation with two brilliant minds that bring unique perspective on the Chinese Internet economy and development of the metaverse in the country.
First, we had Alex Xu, the CEO of MultiMetaverse Inc, a leading animation company in China. Alex was previously the CEO of Leyou Technologies, a China-based game maker that was sold to Tencent in late 2020 for $1.5 billion, and has worked at other leading companies including Qihoo 360, Perfect World, Giant Interactive and Electronic Arts. He holds an MA in Precision Instrument Design and VR from Tsinghua University and an MBA from Chinese University Hong Kong.
Our second guest was Nina Xiang, a renowned author, award-winning journalist, and an expert on the Chinese venture capital and technology sector with nearly twenty years of professional financial and business media experience. She is a speaker at major conferences and summits, and appears frequently in a range of international media, including the BBC, CNN, Financial Times, and CGTN. She currently writes columns for the Nikkei Asia and Forbes, in addition to serving as an advisor/consultant to leading international organizations.
And make sure to check out Nina’s new book entitled “Parallel Metaverses: How the US, China and the Rest of the World Are Shaping Different Virtual Worlds.”
