The Rise of 100 Billion Avatars
How Avatars are Transforming Online Experiences and Shaping the Future of the Metaverse.
Overview
In February 2022, I was interviewed for Citibank's 9th Annual Digital Money Symposium and made the following statement about the metaverse:
"In [Yon Raz-Fridman]’s view, [the metaverse] could be worth $10 trillion and accessed by 100 billion virtual avatars…"
After further reflecting on the matter, I've set out to articulate a detailed perspective on the driving forces behind the metaverse's impending expansion. This memo seeks to bolster my prediction made over two years ago — that the metaverse will exist with over 100 billion virtual inhabitants. At the heart of my argument lies the notion of multifaceted identities: the idea that individuals will embrace a multitude of avatars and personas in the metaverse. These varied and dynamic identities promise to draw an eclectic mix of users and creators, playing a pivotal role in the exponential growth of a boundless virtual universe.
As a parent with a three-year-old daughter, I am deeply invested in ensuring that the next iteration of the Internet is a safe and enriching space for her and her generation. This personal motivation is a significant part of my writing this letter.

Introduction
When I started publishing the podcast Into The Metaverse in 2021, I intended to educate people about what it could become, why it matters, and how it will impact everything. Throughout the publishing of more than 95 episodes to date, I’m fortunate to have hosted dozens of industry leaders, entrepreneurs, executives, and investors and heard their perspectives about what the metaverse is and why it matters - these include Internet luminaries such as Tim O'Reilly (coined the term “Web 2.0”), Philip Rosedale (creator of Second Life), innovation investors like Cathy Wood (ARK Invest), and Snow Crash author Neal Stephenson (who coined the term “Metaverse”) to name a few. In writing this letter, I tapped into their wisdom and the wisdom of many others (scroll down for the complete list of inspiration). I also find the metaverse definition from author and theorist Matthew Ball, who was recently hosted on my show, to be an excellent working statement of all perspectives combined -
"[The metaverse is] a massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds that can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence, and with continuity of data, such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payments.
While Ball does a great job articulating a working statement for thinking about the metaverse, we remain at the early stages of the evolution. As such, this working definition will evolve. The foundations of a metaverse continue to be established, and companies introduce concrete use cases for how the different pillars come together. As I look into the future and assess in what ways the metaverse might impact our lives, there are multiple possible outcomes, among them:
Personal identity and expression: The metaverse will enable people to express themselves through fully customizable avatars and virtual personas, through which they will experiment with how their identity is portrayed, communicated, and expressed. People will also explore how different cultures are manifested through their virtual identities and other appearances, lifestyles, and use cases for how they utilize such virtual identities. This could foster a more inclusive and accepting society but require a more open, trustworthy, and empathetic global society.
Social interaction and connectivity: The metaverse provides an enhanced virtual realm that could revolutionize how people interact, socialize, collaborate, and nurture more immersive digital communities. It can lead to new ways of facilitating meaningful relationships, sharing knowledge, and allowing employees to collaborate virtually on a large scale. It can also be part of the solution for loneliness, which is only becoming a bigger problem, as noted in a recent memo from Scott Galloway.
Employment opportunities and skills: The metaverse will create a new virtual economy that complements our physical economy and can be as big or even more significant. Such a virtual economy will lead to the creation of entirely new jobs that do not exist today. Still, it may have existing comparables - e.g., virtual architects, virtual fashion designers, virtual real estate brokers, and more. Generative AI will enable an even greater creator economy than we see today. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, argues, "Omniverse or the Metaverse is going to be a new economy larger than our current economy."
Privacy, safety, and ethics: Social media created new challenges for society with how we manage data privacy and security, challenges that we still need to figure out how to handle effectively, and we are still struggling with how social media has impacted our society. The metaverse raises further concerns about privacy and safety, as people will share extensive personal data and behaviors in immersive virtual realms. Balancing the benefits of the metaverse with privacy and safety will be a significant challenge to ensure user safety and data protection. This is reinforced when addressing the impact on children and the need to safeguard them from virtual attacks.
The metaverse's impact on society will be multilayered, encompassing not only the aspects mentioned above but also influencing education and learning, health and wellness, entertainment and media consumption, and overall evolving our free time into a much broader category—digital leisure, a term I learned about in ARK Invest's Big Idea 2023 Report.
In this memo, I'm elaborating on the first pillar - Personal Identity and Expression, and laying out a possible path for why the metaverse will have 100 billion virtual inhabitants, what it will drive, and why it matters.
Historical Context of Avatars and Their Use by Humans
According to Merriam-Webster, the word Avatar derives from a Sanskrit word meaning "descent," when it first appeared in English in the late 18th century, it referred to the descent of a deity to the earth. It later came to refer to any incarnation in human form and then to any embodiment, whether or not in the form of a person. In the Internet age, the Avatar has developed another sense - it is now used for the image a person chooses as their "embodiment" in a digital medium.
Over the past two decades, avatars have played an instrumental role in shaping user interaction and online representation, especially on social media and gaming platforms. The evolution of avatars from simplistic images to sophisticated 3D representations has significantly impacted how users engage with one another and present themselves online.
Phase 1: Early-2000s
These were basic, often static images or cartoonish representations primarily used for profile pictures or icons. They offered users a rudimentary way to identify themselves within online communities and added a visual dimension to online profiles, aiding in personalization and identification. A case study to consider is Habbo (formerly Habbo Hotel), an online virtual world and chat room created by Sulake, a Finish studio. Habbo's primary audience was teenagers and young adults. Users on Habbo can create a character, design and build rooms, chat with other players, take care of virtual pets, create and play games, and complete quests. Since its founding in 2000, Habbo has expanded to multiple online communities (or "hotels"), with users from more than 150 countries.
Habbo Hotel's initial success can be attributed to its focus on social interaction, user-generated content, a virtual economy, community building, and entertainment. The platform provided a safe, creative, and enjoyable environment for users to connect, explore, and express themselves in a virtual world.
Phase 2: Mid-2000s
With the rise of social networking platforms like Facebook, MySpace, and Friendster, avatars have gained popularity. Users customize avatars to reflect their personalities and interests, fostering their sense of individuality and making avatars a means of self-expression and personal identity differentiation. This has influenced how users present themselves and connect with others as social networking online gains traction among millions. Myspace, Facebook, and Friendster were successful when launched for various reasons, and they held different meanings for their users. The shared key factors that contributed to their success from an “avatar” standpoint:
Discovery and connecting friends: Enabling users to discover and connect with friends, building a sense of online community, and expanding social networks.
Personalization: Users could customize their profiles with photos and descriptions, enhancing self-expression and allowing for unique online identities.
User-generated content: Users could write blogs, post photos, and create content, fostering engagement and interaction. The platform encouraged self-expression and sharing among friends.
Identity and real-name policy: Facebook encouraged users to use their real names and identities, fostering authenticity and trust in online interactions. This contributed to meaningful and genuine connections.
These platforms generated early success by tapping into various aspects of users' lives, including self-expression, social networking, music, and gaming. They allowed users to connect, express themselves, and explore online relationships, making them meaningful and influential during their respective eras.
Phase 3: Late-2000s
Avatars on platforms like Second Life showcased the potential of highly customizable 3D avatars within virtual worlds. Users could design avatars that capture their ideal selves in a virtual format. At that point, avatars evolved from static images to dynamic 3D representations, enhancing user immersion and blurring the line between virtual and real identities. Second Life, which was launched in 2003 by Linden Lab, achieved notable success and held significant meaning for its users for several reasons:
User-generated content and creativity: Second Life allowed users to create and customize their virtual environments, avatars, objects, and experiences. The UGC mechanic proved to be a groundbreaking feature, enabling creative expression and individuality. Users could also design and sell virtual items, leading to a thriving virtual economy.
Social interaction and community: Second Life provided a social platform for users to interact and socialize with others worldwide. Users could engage in real-time conversations, participate in group activities, and establish meaningful friendships, much like in the physical world. This sense of community was a significant draw for many users.
Economic opportunities: The virtual economy within Second Life allowed users to earn real money by creating and selling virtual products and services. This aspect was significant for content creators, designers, and entrepreneurs, as it offered a source of income and a chance to monetize their virtual skills.

They offered users a fun and engaging way to communicate with friends online, expressing emotions and expanding their ability to express themselves during conversations digitally. Bitmoji has been meaningful for users for multiple reasons, among them:
Personalization and self-expression: Bitmoji allowed users to create avatars that closely resemble themselves, offering a high degree of personalization. Users can customize everything from their Avatar's facial features to clothing and accessories, fostering a strong sense of self-expression.

Cultural relevance and popularity: Bitmoji became a cultural phenomenon, with celebrities, brands, and influencers using Bitmoji to engage with their followers. This cultural relevance contributed to its success and widespread adoption.
Bitmoji's success can be attributed to its emphasis on personalization, fun and creativity, cultural relevance, integration with popular messaging apps, and the ability to enhance communication and self-expression. It offered users an entertaining way to engage with others in the digital space while maintaining a unique sense of identity.
Phase 5: Late 2010s - Early 2020s
This period highlights the emergence of two phenomena - Augmented Reality (AR) avatars on social media platforms like Snapchat and the rapid adoption of 3D immersive platforms like Roblox by a growing audience, accelerated by the pandemic. On the one hand, platforms like Snapchat started integrating AR-powered avatars, enabling users to superimpose virtual characters onto their authentic selves during video chats, allowing avatars to evolve into interactive and augmented reality experiences, elevating online interactions by adding a layer of creativity and entertainment. Among the key advancements that Snapchat introduced over the past several years:
Bitmoji integration: Snapchat acquired Bitmoji, the personalized avatar creation app. This integration allowed users to link their Bitmoji avatars to their Snapchat accounts, enabling Bitmoji in Snapchat stickers and messages. It enhanced personal expression and communication by allowing users to use their personalized avatars in the Snapchat app, making interactions more engaging and fun.
World lenses and 3D Bitmoji: Snapchat introduced World Lenses - AR effects that can be applied to the rear camera, enhancing the user's view of the real world. Additionally, 3D Bitmoji was introduced, allowing users to project their Bitmoji into the real world using AR. AR lenses and filters: Snapchat continuously updates its AR Lenses and Filters, providing a wide range of augmented reality effects that users can apply to their selfies and the world around them. AR Lenses and Filters enhance creativity and self-expression, enabling users to transform their appearance and environment in real-time, making Snapchat a highly engaging platform for avatar-like experiences.
Avatar Editor and Wardrobe: Snapchat introduced the Avatar Editor, allowing users to create personalized Bitmoji avatars directly within the app. The wardrobe feature was also added, enabling users to style their avatars with various clothing options. The Avatar Editor and wardrobe feature made avatar creation more accessible and customizable, encouraging users to design avatars that closely resemble themselves.
Bitmoji for games and stories: Snapchat integrated Bitmoji into games and stories, allowing users to use their Bitmoji avatars in various games and create personalized Bitmoji Stories. Focusing on personalization, interactivity, and creative expression has marked Snapchat's evolution in Avatar and AR integration. Platforms like Roblox, on the other hand, an immersive platform for connection and communication, popular especially with Gen Alpha and Gen Z users and creators with a community of nearly 80 million daily active users and millions of creators, have undergone significant evolution in terms of avatar identities. Among the key advancements that Roblox introduced over the past several years:
Avatar customization and diversity: Roblox has significantly expanded its avatar customization options, allowing users to personalize their avatars more. The platform introduced various clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and animations, promoting diversity and individuality. Avatars will become incredibly realistic, driven by AI and VR/AR advancements. AI will generate avatars that closely resemble users in appearance and mannerisms. This level of realism will enhance immersion and empathy in virtual interactions, making the experience more akin to face-to-face conversations. Many companies, including the world’s biggest technology companies, are investing significant capital to develop realistic avatars through advanced technologies. They all understand the importance of doing so and help fuel the next iteration of creation, connection, expression and commerce online. Here are some key players and their contributions:
Apple
Apple has been strategically advancing its AR/VR capabilities through a combination of hardware, software, and new technologies, with the Vision Pro being a central pillar of their vision for the future. On the software side, Apple’s ARKit is a framework that enables developers to create augmented reality experiences for iOS devices. It leverages advanced computer vision, real-time rendering, and motion tracking to blend virtual objects seamlessly into the real world. In addition, Apple’s focus on high-fidelity 3D rendering ensures that virtual objects and avatars look incredibly realistic.

Meta
Heavily invested in the metaverse, aiming to create realistic avatars through their Reality Labs efforts. Their advancements include photorealistic avatars, sophisticated facial tracking, and full-body motion capture to enhance virtual presence and interactions in their Horizon Worlds platform and new hardware device platforms such as Meta Quest. I previously argued that Meta is aiming to compete with Apple by building the “Android” for the next major computing paradigm, Mixed Reality, and ensure that it doesn’t miss on the next computing platform shift, the first since Apple’s launch of the iPhone.
Epic Games
Through its Unreal Engine, Epic Games has developed MetaHuman Creator, a cloud-based app that empowers creators to design highly realistic digital humans. This tool leverages AI and deep learning to offer customizable and lifelike avatars for games, films, and other interactive experiences. Through new platforms like UEFN, Epic will be well positioned to make cutting-edge tools like MetaHuman available not only to AAA developers and studios but also to its long tail of creators.
Nvidia
Nvidia’s Omniverse platform allows for real-time collaboration and simulation, enabling the creation of highly realistic avatars and 3D environments, powedred by the open Universal Scene Description. Nvidia's work on AI-driven facial animation and voice synthesis also contributes significantly to avatar realism. In late 2023 Nvidia unveiled major upgrades to its Nvidia Avatar Cloud Engine suite of technologies, bringing enhanced realism and accessibility to AI-powered avatars and digital humans. These latest animation and speech capabilities will enable more natural conversations and emotional expressions. Creators will be able to leverage Nvidia technologies to rapidly build next-generation avatar experiences.
These companies (and many others) are leveraging advanced AI, machine learning, and VR/AR technologies to push the boundaries of what is possible with digital avatars, making interactions in virtual spaces more immersive and lifelike. And we are still at the very beginning of this evolution.
AI-powered personalized interactions
AI will enable avatars to interact naturally and dynamically. These avatars will better understand context, emotions, and user preferences and adapt their behavior accordingly. We will see avatars acting as personal assistants, helping users with tasks, engaging in meaningful conversations, and enhancing the overall user experience in virtual spaces. AI-powered interactions with realistic avatars are already revolutionizing various industries by creating more engaging and contextually aware experiences. Here are several use cases and examples:
Virtual Personal Assistants
Virtual personal assistants that understand user preferences, schedules, and habits to provide customized support. Example of that is the Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa - These AI-powered assistants can already manage schedules, control smart home devices, and provide personalized recommendations based on user behavior and preferences. Both companies are increasingly integrating more lifelike avatars for more natural and engaging user interactions, and a new wave of consumer devices have been launched on the back of ChatGPT’s ascent, such as Humane’s Ai Pin.
Customer Service and Support
AI avatars will serve as customer service representatives, providing real-time assistance and support with a human touch. Soul Machines is one of a handful companies to watch in the space. The company creates digital humans that interact with customers in a natural manner.
Education and Training
AI-powered avatars will be used for personalized educational experiences where they can act as tutors or trainers, adapting to the learning style and pace of each student. Squirrel AI is one example of a company in the space - its AI-powered education platform uses avatars to provide personalized tutoring. The system promises to adapt to each student’s strengths and weaknesses, offering customized lessons and feedback, thereby enhancing the learning experience. One more company that enters the race for AI education is former scientist of OpenAI, Andrej Karpathy, who launched recently a new startup, Eureka Labs, aiming to build a new, AI-native school.
Healthcare and Therapy
AI avatars will act as virtual healthcare assistants or therapists, providing personalized care and emotional support. An example for a company in the space is Woebot, the creator of the Woebot Health Copilot, an end-to-end enterprise solution that aims to increase access to mental health support and improve business outcomes. Woebot uses cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques to offer personalized support and coping strategies based on user interactions and reported feelings.
Virtual Companionship
AI avatars will act as companions for the elderly or socially isolated, offering personalized interaction and emotional support. ElliQ is an AI companion for older adults that provides personalized interactions, reminders, and conversation. ElliQ promises to adapt to the user's preferences and needs, offering companionship, cognitive stimulation, and assistance with daily activities, thereby enhancing the quality of life for its users.
